Taaa Daaa

Here it is my “new” blog name. And well it’s about “photography” and, oh, words too. So I am going to try everyday to post a new pic. Having something to say everyday might be more of a challenge (and not because I don’t have anything to say but because I just don’t have that much time). As always I appreciate your comments and thoughts.

Peace

Ch…Ch…Ch…Changes

I’m changing the name of my blog peeps. Trying to focus on my photography and how it reflects me! I cannot tell you how absolutely thrilled I am to have found something I love to do and what’s more I think maybe I might kinda be good at this photog thing. So I am going for it.

My first camera was a gift from my grandfather who left me his old Canon AE1 and two lenses. It is the only thing I have from him so I have a bit of an emotional attachment to the brand. WAIT! Damn that wise old man knew it then. I was 16 when he died and somehow he knew. Hot damn! And true to my form it’s only taken me 26 years more to figure it out!!! Thanks Grand Dad for the subtle message. Took me a while. Ha!

Now to figure out how I am going to “invest” what little money I have in a new camera body (ummmm in reality that would be put on my credit card!). And here comes the age old debate Nikon/Canon. Then a decent lens. Although based on Grand Dad maybe I’ll stick with Canon. Ahhhh and what to call myself; figure I am going to throw my name into the mix. Let me be me. It’s time to shine a little.

Oh if you haven’t figured out by now – I LOVE your feedback so you fellow photogs – if you’ve got thoughts on cameras/lenses based on your experience and what you have seen of my work – bring it. And if you have thoughts on anything else – bring that too.

Peace.

Dear Ansel Adams:

Dear Mr. Adams -

I would like to thank you for your most amazing body of work that has inspired me to find, at my “tender age” of 42, something I love to do. And well maybe I might have something here. I would also like to commend you on setting the bar so very high so that I am constantly aspiring toward more visually.

It’s funny – I was an art major in college. I managed to get a A in every single one of my major classes (ok well not when I was a business major! That damn accounting teacher and his ever increasing rows of hair plugs. WAY to distracting for a visual, tactile, kinesthetic learner like myself. You have NO idea how much self control it took to NOT rub my hands through those bumpy rows of new hair. Ohhhh wait… SQUIRREL!). Back on topic. Art major – my worst class was the History of Photography. I got a B+.  I think I just wanted to do it all. Learn it all. Not just study the theory. In hindsight of course theory and history are wonderful and essential. We just spent SO much time on Mathew Brady’s Civil War photography. It was interesting and amazing but there was more… Adams, Arbus, Cartier-Bresson, Curtis, Gibson, Sherman, and more and more.  Well things have yet again come full circle in my life. And Mr. Adams I am grateful.

I would like to thank Paul for recommending me to Angie Moon (Check her out at http://www.angiemoonphotographer.com/) and to Angie for helping me learn the ropes of aperature, ISO, shutter speed, and of course giving me a little bit of faith in this venture on which I embark.

And with that said – my other readers beyond Mr. Adams from the beyond – I have asked your opinions on my work. I welcome honesty and am humbled by your support and praise. Feel free to tell me if you think some of my work sucks or if it rocks. I love the feedback. Keep it coming.

Peace and happi capturing.

OK Facebook – What tha?!?!

What is going on with facebook? I’m annoyed. I guess in retrospect and current-spect I have kind of had a negative emotion week (considering my last post was titled “Grumpy”). Either way – get your act together Facebook. Or is it WordPress that needs to do so? Again either way – one or the other – get it together and fix it so my blog posts show up on my Facebook page. I rely on most of my “fans” hahaha through my social networking relationships.

And with that – I happened to come up with a great idea for a platform for my blogg. I have decided to chronicle the trials and tribulations of my latest venture as photographer extraordinaire. Hahahahahaha. Truth be told, I think I have finally, finally, finally found something I might be good at and what’s more is I really LOVE IT!

On that note dear friends and readers… PLEASE PLEASE leave feedback here on HappiBird or on my flickr images (http://www.flickr.com/photos/happibird/). I can’t reach for the stars without you…

Grumpy

Yup… that’s me. Grumpy. Not meself. Just a tad out of sorts. I am ready for the end of the school year (I’m a special education teacher and as a Mom of two young uns, HA, summer just means I don’t have to go to work. Summer vacation isn’t really a vacation. I am not complaining mind you. I am THRILLED to have some time off from work and more time to hang with my kiddoos, take pictures, make photographs, paint a bit, hit the dojo, learn more photoshop, spend time with Paul, and do all that other stuff life demands without as much pressure and with much more time.

Back to grumpy… ARG! I’m grumpy. But here are some new photos (to the left and on my Flickr page).

Peace peeps…

Oh… please dear readers let me know which photos you dig. I’ll choose those to enter into the photo contests.

I’m a bad, bad blogger

Truth be told, I have been a bad blogger girl. I have not written, barely posted new pics, and been focused on so many other things. This is not to say I have not achieved anything over the past week or so. I have (and not in this order):

  • Earned my yellow belt in Kemm Aiki Bujutsu. Went to class a few nights too.
  • Made 10 different doctors’ appointments for myself and the kids (no exaggerating!)
  • Studied for my Praxis in Art (well not as much as I would like)
  • Painted a lamp shade
  • Mowed the lawn
  • Cleaned the garage. I mean REALLY cleaned.
  • Did all the Momly, House-Wifely (minus the wife) duties I do each day.
  • Took a few more steps with Paul on the journey of our relationship.
  • Went to a friends house for dinner with Paul and Ramon.
  • Hung with the kiddies.
  • Had a conference call with Paloma’s school.
  • Worked.
  • Started a business plan.
  • Trimmed my bangs. (Sorry Gretchen!)
  • Went grocery shopping.
  • Bought two new pairs of cute flats on super sale at Banana.
  • Went to Happy Hour with Paul.
  • Got some awesome spices at Marshall’s. Yes, Marshall’s! They carry awesome spices and always have the best Agave.
  • Took photos.
  • Watched a movie with the kids.

I think that’s it although I probably missed a few things. I really, really enjoy writing on this here blog. It makes me happi. And whilst I think I don’t have many “followers,” I am fine with that. I simply enjoy the process.

Oh by the way, for those of you “following me,” I have not done really well with the scheduling time thing. And for those of you who actually really know me, well then you’re not surprised one bit.

Spring break is coming. We will be here. And I’ll be going to 500 appointments that are well over due. BUT I will write more and study more and take more pictures and chill with the kids. Oh and start running with the kids or at least get a ride or two in outside!

Until then… peace and happiness YO!

Happibird-brain is more like it

My Mom, in a rather witty moment, speaking to me of my blog says, “Oh yes your blog… happibird-brain is more like it!” Hahahaha… hahahahaha… hahahaha!!!  My sister Margi and I have a good laugh about this quite often. We were actually just chuckling back and forth to each other yesterday, basically acting like “bird brains,” ending each comment with a “Happibird-brain is more like it!” kind-of thing that brought us both to straight out fits of giggling. I mentioned to her that this would most certainly be the title of my next entry.  If you knew my Mom, you would relish in this gem of a witticism as much as my sister and I do. And well, I suppose, if you knew me you might agree with Mom about me being a bird brain, albeit a happy one though. Hahahaha… hahahahaha! OK stop finding that SO funny please.

Well I got to thinking – shocker – what does “bird brain” actually mean. Here’s what I found:

  1. Addle-head: a person with confused ideas; incapable of serious thought
  2. Birdbrain refers to a stupid person. Often it refers to a person with a short attention span.
  3. Birdbrain was a Boston, MA post-grunge band that was founded by neighborhood friends in 1992 and dissolved in 1997.
  4. Birdbrain is the second album by Buffalo Tom, released in 1990. Dinosaur Jr mastermind J Mascis once again assisted with production, alongside Sean Slade. Buffalo Tom singer/guitarist Bill Janovitz said that Mascis’ influence probably accented the band’s edgier side.
  5. Someone who is not very smart or clever
  6. Bird-Brain – Bird-Brain is a fictional character, a superhero from Marvel Comics.
  7. Birdbrained – silly and frivolous; empty-headed

Here’s my take on my happibird-brainedness:

  1. Not so addle-headed but I can tend toward confused at times and perhaps too serious of thoughts.
  2. Stupid – no; short attention span – what were we talking about?
  3. I did have my grunge sorta days – well flannel plaid shirts weren’t really my thing actually
  4. I was born in Buffalo but not sure about Buffalo Tom
  5. I’m smart – duh! And clever, well witty more so.
  6. Superhero? My kids think so. (That will probably not last through the onset of their puberty!)
  7. Silly – often; frivolous – purchases mostly; empty-headed – I wish I could be sometimes.

This was good, cathartic almost, and fun. I love my Mom’s bit of wit. It was so very awesome. And it is now forever commemorated in the blogosphere. Being a happibird-brain makes me happy!

Grande debate

As I ready to go visit Paloma, I am having yet another grande debate with myself. Typically these inner debates are a should I/shouldn’t I sort of thing. (By the way when I write I chuckle to myself because I know there are some people who read this – Margi – that get a chuckle as well reading about the inner workings of my bizarre mind!)

Back to it… so as I have said, I am fancying myself a photographer and artist of sorts these days (the artist part is just getting going again). I am loving the idea of mixed media photography/painting stuff. And as such my grande debate is do I or do I not buy this really awesome macro lens I want.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/reviews/canon-ef-100mm-f-2.8-usm-macro-lens-review.aspx

I really, really like details. When I look at things that is what I notice. When I listen. That is what I hear. Details. So I’m leaning toward getting one. I’ll have to shop around on ebay and such. It’s not the lens that takes good photos it is the photographer. But this here shutter bug thinks this lens sure might help.
